    Vibration studies carried out in a vacuum chamber are reported for a three-sided membrane with inwardly curved edges. Uniform tension was transmitted by thin steel cables encased in the edges. Variation of ambient air pressure from atmospheric to near vacuum resulted in increased response frequencies and amplitudes. The first few vibration modes measured in a near vacuum are shown to be predictable by a finite element structural analysis over a range of applied tension loads. The complicated vibration mode behavior observed during tests at various air pressures is studied analytically with a nonstructural effective air-mass approximation. The membrane structure is a candidate for reflective surfaces in space antennas

    Tracing the journey: two School-based counsellors ‘coming out’ of the counselling room. An ethnographic enquiry within a UK inner-city secondary school

    Mental health issues for young people in the UK are relatively common, being experienced by upwards of 10% of people aged between 5 and 15 (NHS Digital, 2018). Evidence for the benefits of school-based counselling in UK schools is also steadily mounting, as is interest in and support for the idea. In spite of this, its provision within schools in England remains insecure and it has been subject to a recurring cycle of development and decline since its inception in the 1960s. This dissertation comprises a personalised account of the researchers’ own shared journey as experienced counsellors who were new to an inner-city secondary school setting and were encountering difficulties working effectively in that new context. Our initial question was therefore: How could we make sense of the difficulties we were experiencing? As our research progressed, social and cultural processes in the school community were identified, and a further question emerged: How might any of the understanding gained be used as a bridge to better connection in this setting? The research goes beyond the focus on one-one counselling that has been the emphasis of the majority of school-based counselling research and practice. It is believed that as a result the study may illuminate some of the cultural intersections and complexities inherent in the school-based counselling context that the researchers believe require greater attention if the offer of counselling within schools is to become a more secure provision. This intention led the two researchers to adopt a reflexive and ethnographic, insider research approach for the current study, which was undertaken in an inner-city setting in an area of significant deprivation with a very diverse student population. Data analysis began with early data collection, in line with a Grounded Theory approach (Charmaz, 2006 ; Glaser & Strauss, 1967) and our ongoing analysis shaped the continuing data collection. A new theory about adult-to -adolescent process termed ‘tenuous contact’ was constructed and a post-qualification conversion diploma was developed and delivered based on the research findings, which will equip counsellors to work in this sector. The study will be of interest to professionals concerned with school-based counselling and, more widely, it is hoped that it will contribute to an understanding of social and contextual issues in offering mental health support within education

    Student Outcomes in Traditional, Hybrid, and Online Courses in Community College Career and Technical Education Programs

    The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine whether differences in student course outcomes as defined by final course grades existed between three content delivery methods in career and technical education courses: Traditional (face to face), hybrid, and online. Final course grades in career and technical education courses at one community college for the Fall 2011 through the Fall 2015 semesters were used in this study to compare the success of students in courses employing the three content delivery methods. The outcomes for male and female students and the outcomes for traditional and nontraditional students in career and technical education programs were compared as well. The method of delivery was found to have an impact. Withdrawal rates for career and technical education courses were also impacted by course delivery method. Seven research questions were included in this study, and the data was analyzed using one-sample chi-square tests for the seven research questions in the study. Results indicated that students had significantly higher student learning outcomes in traditional courses in career and technical education programs than in either hybrid or online courses. Withdrawal rates were higher for hybrid and online courses than traditional courses. Student gender and age were related to student final course outcomes with both male and female students more likely to earn transferable final course grades in traditional courses than in hybrid or online courses. Traditional age and nontraditional age students were also more likely to earn transferable final course grades in traditional courses than in hybrid or online courses. Nontraditional age students were significantly more likely than traditional age students to earn a transferable final course grade regardless of delivery method. Overall findings suggest that delivery method may impact student outcomes in career and technical education courses. The study is significant in that it provides insight into specific differences in student outcomes by the three different delivery methods currently used in higher education and may be used for comparison with other institutions’ student outcomes

    A general form of the ``Wick rotation'', starting from imaginary-time Green functions of quantum-mechanical systems in thermal equilibrium at positive temperature, is established. Extending work of H. Araki, the role of the KMS condition and of an associated anti-unitary symmetry operation, the ``modular conjugation'', in constructing analytic continuations of Green functions from real- to imaginary times, and back, is clarified. The relationship between the KMS condition for the vacuum with respect to Lorentz boosts, on one hand, and the spin-statistics connection and the PCT theorem, on the other hand, in local, relativistic quantum field theory is recalled. General results on the reconstruction of local quantum theories in various non-trivial gravitational backgrounds from ``Euclidian amplitudes'' are presented. In particular, a general form of the KMS condition is proposed and applied, e.g., to the Unruh- and the Hawking effects.
